Post-Conference Field Trip: Volcanic Kenya Rift

Dates: August 8-11 (+12), 2026 (4 days + 1)

Departure: From Nyeri Drop-off: in Nairobi

Leaving Nyeri accommodations early (Aberdare National Park gate opens 6AM; entrance fee included), day visit includes hike to Cenozoic dyke swarm on mountain peaks, waterfalls over competent lava flows and a descent down the western rift escarpment to our permanent base at the Elsamere Lodge (https://elsaconservationtrust.org/), at Lake Naivasha. Full board included, while drinks are paid by individuals (applies to all days).

August 9
As indicated on the below geological map, we will on this day explore the Eburru Volcanic Centre to the north of Lake Naivasha, including a visit to the Kariandusi prehistoric site (https://museums.or.ke/kariandusi-museum/). Nature reserve, guided hike and museum fees are included.
3 Mon,
August 10
Exploring the nearby Olkaria Complex, in the Hell's Gate National Park (entrance fee included), its compositionally evolved lava flows and active geothermal fields. Trip will partly be guided by KenGen (https://www.kengen.co.ke/), operating the Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant.
4 Tue,
August 11
Exploring the Suswa Volcano, with its double crater caldera and lava tube caves (https://mtsuswa.org/; entrance fees and guided hikes included), before ascending the western rift escarpment and dropping off delegates in Nairobi (e.g., Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, hotel at own expense, etc.). Morning Longonot volcano crater rim hike (https://mtlongonot.org/) might upon request be integrated at extra on-site payment by delegate. An additional nature day at the Nairobi National Park can be added to above four-day trip, with details provided below.
 
 
 

Note that any final pre-8PM drop-offs in Nairobi might need to be arranged at own cost and effort, as the 4-day post-conference trip cannot guarantee earlier arrival and drop-offs on Tuesday the 11th of August. When known, please, communicate preferred drop-off times and places to Martin (klausen@sun.ac.za), for coordination and potentially allowing earlier drop-off.

Arriving at Maasai Lodge (https://maasailodge.com/; full board included) late Tuesday 11th of August and enjoying a night at the border of the Nairobi National Park delegates will enjoy game drives, nature hikes, including the park’s treetop walkway and animal orphanage (all fees included). Do not plan any final drop-offs (e.g., airport check-ins, other hotel) before 8 PM.
