Pre-Conference Field Trip: Rwanda → Uganda → Kenya

Dates: July 27 - August 1, 2026 (6 days)

Arrival: Kigali International Airport, Rwanda (Sunday, July 26), where a shuttle to and full board accommodation at our first hotel in Kigali is included.

Please register and pay for the field trip as early as possible to help ensure the best booking rates for accommodations.

Rwanda: Post-Eburnian bimodal magmatism (granites & dolerites) at the core of a Kibaran LIP, cut by collisional rare-metal (W, Sn, Ta-Nb, Li) pegmatites of the Kibaran Belt. Full board lodging in Kisoro included in price.
2 Tue,
July 28
Uganda: Continued traverse through the Kibaran Belt, overprinted by potassic alkali volcanism and rifting along the western branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). Full board hotel in Fort Portal included.
3 Wed,
July 29
The arcuate ~1.38 Ga Lake Victoria Dyke Swarms across a Paleoproterozoic Rwenzori Fold Belt. Full board hotel in Kampala included.
4 Thu,
July 30
Buganda Group waterfalls at the source of the White Nile, transitioning into the Archean North Tanzanian Craton with cross-cutting mafic dykes. Full board hotel in Busia included.
5 Fri,
July 31
After artesian and corporate gold mining at Tira (Uganda), we continue our Archean traverse into Kenya, where greenstone belts (± ancient LIPs) are drilled and explored for gold. Full board Hotel in Kisumu included.
6 Sat,
August 1
Traverse across the eastern (Kenya Rift) branch of the EARS, with sodic alkali volcanism, and ending in Nyeri, where trip delegates must arrange their own accommodation for the Conference.

PRICES IN US$ and based on citizenship (to be paid together with conference registration fees). Proof of payments needs to be provided to our treasurer, Patrick (patrick.kariuki@dkut.ac.ke) and Martin (klausen@sun.ac.za.with)), with copy of passport and detailing type of accommodation.

Note: Delegates joining the pre-conference field trip should apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) through Rwanda as their first entry country.

Health Advisory: Delegates attending the field trips should review the itinerary and discuss appropriate health and safety measures with their travel clinic or healthcare provider before travel. Comprehensive travel insurance is also recommended
